SDO catches a double play

This still from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) caught the action in freeze-frame splendour when the Sun popped off two events at once on 28 January 2011. A filament on the left side became unstable and erupted, while an M-1 flare (mid-sized) and a Coronal Mass Ejection on the right blasted into space. Several other flashes and bursts erupted from the active region on the right as well, but neither event is heading towards Earth. (Image: NASA/SDO)
